What is EMUN – European Model United Nations

EMUN is a United Nations simulation for high school and university students, who debate as representatives of UN member states in committees modelled on the United Nations General Assembly.

During the project, participants discuss today's global issues — such as peace and security, human rights, sustainable development and international cooperation — while sharpening key skills such as:

Negotiation
Problem solving
Leadership and teamwork
Public speaking and critical thinking

Beyond the UN simulation, EMUN is a unique chance to understand more deeply how international institutions work, including the decision-making mechanisms of the European Union.

Taking part in EMUN means putting what you learn in the classroom into practice in a stimulating, realistic and international setting.

EMUN: the simulation

EMUN (European Model United Nations) is an event that simulates how the United Nations works, organised by European People in collaboration with IMUNA (International Model United Nations Association).

During EMUN, students represent member states and discuss issues such as peace and security, human rights, sustainable development and international cooperation.

Every year EMUN attracts hundreds of students from all over Europe and other parts of the world, who get the chance to gain valuable skills in a simulated yet realistic setting.

MUN: how the simulation works

An EMUN (European Model United Nations) simulation usually runs over three days, within a five-day trip, and is made up of several stages.

01 Registration and role assignment

Students register for the simulation and are assigned the member states they will represent during the event; they then study their country's position and prepare speeches and documents.

02 Negotiation session

Students meet in thematic groups or in plenary, where they debate and negotiate current issues such as peace and security, human rights, sustainable development and international cooperation.

03 Drafting official documents

Participants draft official documents, such as resolutions and recommendations, which are then submitted to the General Assembly for approval.

04 Closing ceremony

All participants come together for the closing ceremony, where the adopted resolutions are presented and everyone reflects on what they have learned during the event.
